Beronia is celebrating its 50th birthday with a commemorative edition of its Reserva and is paying tribute to the winery’s founders, a group of friends who used to meet at a Txoko to share their passion for wine and gastronomy.

Ollauri, November 2023.- Back in 1973, a group of friends used to get together at a txoko in Ollauri, a municipality in the heart of Rioja Alta, to enjoy wine and great food together. These gatherings led them to found Beronia, a winery that is now half a century old and where passion drives every aspect of the day-to-day work. To commemorate this temporal milestone, the winery suggests drinking a toast with Beronia Reserva 50 Aniversario.

Beronia Reserva 50 Aniversario

Created to enjoy on special occasions and always with friends, this commemorative edition of Beronia reserva has been drawn from the 2019 vintage, which the D.O.Ca. Rioja classified as Excellent. The Tempranillo and Graciano grapes from which it is made were grown in the vineyards that surround the winery and express the elegance and balance that are typical of Rioja Alta and are features that are ideal for wine intended to be laid down.

Care and cosseting marked the pace for making this Reserva wine, which matured in the cellars for 18 months in 80 French oak Bordeaux barrels and mixed oak barrels, the latter made with American oak staves and French oak ends. This ageing was followed by an additional 18 months ageing in bottle, a period that lent the wine its elegance and harmony.

The essence of the wine is reflected in its beautiful deep garnet colour and attractive, complex aromas, with red fruits on the surface and a background of chocolate over balsamic, menthol notes. On the palate, the wine is rounded, flavoursome and long, with balanced acidity – a profile that makes it the best match for roasts, cutlets, ibérico cured meats and mature cheese.

From the txoko to the world’s most sustainable winery

Beronia Reserva 50 Aniversario commemorates the story of a winery that started to write its own chapter in the history of the D.O.Ca. Rioja in 1973. A story that includes everything from the get-togethers at the txoko to the construction of the first winery and the release of the “5th year”, the first wine to be sold. There are significant milestone s too, such as the winery joining the González Byass Family of Wines in 1982, Beronia arriving in 80 countries and the winery’s output being recognised in national and international competitions.

Over the course of this half century, Beronia has reflected the essence of Rioja, making wines that have displayed the personality of this Designation of Origin as well as more modern styles. A winemaking chronicle in which innovation and sustainability have played a pivotal role. Two examples are the use of mixed barrels for ageing the wines in and the new winery specially for Reserva and Rioja terroir wines, the first in the world to have obtained LEED V4 BD+C:NC and LEED Gold certifications, making it the most sustainable on the planet.
